What we do

We're working hard to make our trains and stations more sustainable.

We're having a close look at everything we do to reduce our carbon footprint, including our trains, stations, and supply chain. This includes developing a plan to decarbonise our operations in the short and long term. This will help us reduce our impact on the environment, and on your travels too.

While we're working on our plan, we wanted to keep you in the loop about what we're already doing to make a difference.

Our latest annual (2021/22) carbon emissions are:

Carbon emissions reaching 90,618 22/21
  • Scope 1 carbon emissions 2021/22 33,205 tonnes of C02e*
  • Scope 2 carbon emissions 2021/22 57,413 33,205 tonnes of C02e*
  • Total scope 1 and 2 90,618 tonnes of C02e*
  • As we develop our decarbonisation pathway, we will be measuring and reporting on our scope 3 (indirect) carbon emissions.

But we're not just sitting around waiting for things to happen – we're taking action now.

For example, we've installed energy efficient LED lighting at 107 stations, saving lots of energy.

We’ve also been working hard to save water. One of our new fleets are so smart that they recycle sink water into the toilets onboard, and we’ve installed water-saving taps at 50 of our stations to help reduce our carbon footprint. We're committed to doing everything we can to create a low-carbon, sustainable railway that benefits everyone.
