Child train tickets

Children travel for less with our wide range of discounted train tickets.

Children under 5

If you’re travelling with children under 5, they can travel for free alongside a fare-paying parent or guardian. If it is a busy train and all spaces are occupied, they will need to sit on your lap.

Children aged 5 to 15

For children aged 5 to 15, there is a 50% discount on the price of a full adult ticket.

Recommended proof of age ID

We recommend that children who look older than 16 carry a form of ID to show that they are eligible to a child ticket. For example, a ‘Child Rate’ Photocard, which can be obtained for free at any staffed train station. You just need a passport-sized photograph.

If your child lives within the West Midlands rail zones, you can also apply for an under 16 photocard via the Transport for West Midlands’ website . This helps prove your child’s age on trains, buses and trams.

Termly Student Season tickets

If your child travels to school by train, our termly Student Season Ticket allows up to a 50% discount on the usual season ticket price.

  • Students aged 15 or under – 25% discount on the usual child season ticket price
  • Students aged 16 or over – 50% discount on the usual adult season ticket price

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) – bus, train and metro discount

If your child travels regularly by more than one mode of public transport (bus, train and tram) in the West Midlands. A Swift child photocards gives you get a 50% discount off the adult rate.

£1 train tickets for kids

An Off-Peak Family Travelcard​ allows up to four kids travel for just £1 each to London when accompanied by an adult when travelling Off-Peak.

If you are nNetwork or nTrain season ticket holder within the West Midlands, you can take one adult and up to two children with you on the train for a £1 return fare when travelling Off-Peak . Additional children can be added for 50p each.
