South Asian Heritage Month 2026: Unity in Diversity

South Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of people with roots across South Asia, while creating space for colleagues to share their own experiences and perspectives.

The theme for 2026, “Unity in Diversity,” reminds us that our differences can enrich our workplaces, strengthen our professional relationships and help us better understand the communities we serve.

What does “Unity in Diversity” mean for London Northwestern Railway?

At London Northwestern Railway, our people bring a wide range of cultures, languages, faith and experiences to the railway every day. Each colleague has their own story, but we are united by a shared purpose: working together to provide the best possible experience for our customers and communities.

Unity does not mean that everyone must think or behave in the same way. It means creating an environment where people feel respected and included. When everyone encouraged to contribute and be heard, we create a stronger and more successful workforce.

This is particularly important for an organisation serving such varied communities. When our workforce reflects and understands the people who travel with us, we can make better decisions, challenge assumptions and provide a more inclusive service.

In our staff’s own words

The best way to understand what South Asian heritage means is to listen to the people whose lives and identities it shapes. We invited colleagues from across our company to share what Unity in Diversity means to them.

South Asian Heritage Month is a valuable moment of recognition, but inclusion must continue throughout the year. We can all help make “Unity in Diversity” part of our everyday culture by:

  • Listening with curiosity and without making assumptions.
  • Respecting different cultures and religions.
  • Creating space for a range of voices in decisions.
  • Challenging stereotypes, prejudice and inappropriate behaviour, as well as unconscious bias.
  • Checking in with others and asking what meaningful support looks like to them.

Small actions can have a significant impact. Together, they help create a workplace in which people feel seen, valued and able to succeed and progress.

A final message from our Learning and Development Business Partner

“Unity in diversity is about recognising that every colleague brings something valuable to our organisation. When people feel safe to be themselves, share their perspectives and learn from one another, we build stronger teams and provide a better service to our customers. South Asian Heritage Month is an important opportunity to celebrate the contribution of our South Asian colleagues to the railways, listen to their experiences and continue building a truly inclusive workplace where everyone feels that they belong.”
