London Northwestern Railway: Primary school pupils set to brighten up Hertfordshire railway station

Primary school students are set to brighten up Watford Junction station after becoming London Northwestern Railway’s (LNR) newest volunteers.

The students, aged between seven and eleven from Cherry Tree Primary School in Watford, have taken on the role of ‘station adopters’ and plan to give the station a makeover with fresh flowers and greenery, inspired by the school’s gardening club.

Station adopters are volunteers who lend a helping hand at their local station to keep it well maintained. Their projects can include gardening, painting and installing artwork or information boards. LNR and sister-brand West Midlands Railway (WMR) jointly have over 440 volunteers across its network of 155 stations.

The adoption comes after the primary school visited the station during Rail Safety Week in June when the students tried their hand at becoming station announcers by sharing important safety notices with passengers.

Watford Junction is a busy transport hub which connects more than seven million passengers every year with major cities including London, Milton Keynes and Birmingham.

Shantel Carty, community engagement manager at LNR said: “It’s amazing to have the students at Cherry Tree Primary School on board as station adopters. When they visited in June, they brought such enthusiasm and really put a smile on passengers’ faces with their announcements. Now they’ll be making the station bloom with flowers, helping to make the platforms more welcoming for customers. I’m excited to see what they achieve over the coming months.”

Emma Hibberd, deputy headteacher at Cherry Tree Primary School, said: “Getting out of the classroom and into our local community is a fantastic way for our children to feel excited about learning and see the impact of their hard work first hand. Becoming station adopters is a great opportunity for our students and we are excited to get to work, so we can make the station look better than ever.”
