London Northwestern Railway: Primary school pupils become Watford Junction station announcers for Rail Safety Week

Passengers at Watford Junction station are being reminded of how to stay safe on the railway by a series of special announcements this week following a partnership between London Northwestern Railway (LNR) and a local primary school.

Children from Cherry Tree Primary School in Watford paid a special visit to the station to record the announcements, which are being played out from today to mark the start of Rail Safety Week (w/c 15 June).

The youngsters - Amelie, aged 9, Kian, aged 5, Ayman, aged 8, Raaya, aged 10 and Sanuka, aged 10 - were chosen following a colouring competition run by the school using LNR themed photographs as the template.

The announcements include six different safety warnings such as reminders to stay back from the platform edge, how to stay safe in the heat and reminding passengers to mind the gap when boarding.

Simon Newell, safety, security and sustainability director at LNR, said: “Keeping our customers and staff safe is our number one priority all year round and we are always looking for new ways to get our messages across.

“All the students did a great job of recording their safety announcements. We hope they will make our passengers smile as they travel through Watford Junction, while acting as a reminder of how to stay safe on board and at stations.”

Emma Hibberd, assistant head teacher from Cherry Tree Primary School, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to see behind the scenes at their local station and learn more about staying safe on the railway.

"At Cherry Tree, we always talk about ‘Learning together, learning for life,’ and this project perfectly captured that spirit, taking education beyond the classroom to help keep our whole community safe. Our children really had to aim high and be brave to record these announcements.

"I hope that hearing younger voices delivering these important safety messages will truly resonate with passengers, and I know the children are absolutely thrilled to hear their hard work going out in public.”

Watford Junction is one of the busiest stations on the LNR network, with more than seven million passengers passing through the station every year.

Rail Safety Week is run by Rail Forum and aims to raise awareness of the importance of staying safe when travelling and working on the railway.
