Storm Alex – Advice for rail travellers

Rail passengers are being advised to consider very carefully if they need to travel this weekend. Storm Alex is due to arrive from France in the small hours of Saturday morning bringing risks of high winds and flooding.

Network Rail has imposed a 50 mph speed limit on train services which means fewer trains can run and journeys will take longer. Rising water levels also mean that some services may have to be suspended if tracks flood and signalling systems are affected.

London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway operations director, Darren Ward, said “We are asking people to consider very carefully if they need to travel this weekend. We have all seen before the type of disruption that can be caused by major storms. Our intention is to run as many trains as possible for as long as we can but only while it remains safe to do so but we are expecting to be operating a much reduced timetable.”
