Requirements and restrictions of the 16-17 Saver

Anyone aged 16 or 17 can use this railcard. While a parent or guardian is welcome to purchase the card for a young person, the benefits are exclusive to the registered cardholder. No one else can use the discount.

As long as the card remains active, it can be used for travel right up until the holder’s 18th birthday.

The card provides coverage across the National Rail network throughout England and Wales. However, there are specific exclusions to keep in mind:

  • Regional restrictions: It is not valid for use on ScotRail or Caledonian Sleeper routes.
  • Service exclusions: The discount does not apply to First Class fares.
  • London transport: You cannot use this railcard for travel on the DLR or the London Underground.
