Validity changes: From 17 August 2026, the 16-17 Saver will give students who turn 18 during the academic year 50% off rail travel for a full 12 months from the date of purchase. All 16-17 Savers purchased before a student's 18th birthday will be valid for one year from the date of purchase.

Whether you’re travelling from Birmingham to London or London to Rugby, London Northwestern Rail saves you money. You can use the 16-17 Saver Railcard as many times as you like and make great savings.

If you buy a 16-17 Saver before your 18th birthday, and will turn 18 during the academic year, you can continue using it for the full validity period.

Requirements and restrictions of the 16-17 Saver ?

Anyone aged 16 or 17 can use this railcard. While a parent or guardian is welcome to purchase the card for a young person, the benefits are exclusive to the registered cardholder. No one else can use the discount.

The 16-17 Saver is valid for one year from the date of purchase. Students who purchase a 16-17 Saver and will turn 18 during the academic year, can continue using it for the full validity period (1 year).

The card provides coverage across the National Rail network throughout England and Wales. However, there are specific exclusions to keep in mind:

  • Regional restrictions: It is not valid for use on ScotRail or Caledonian Sleeper routes.
  • Service exclusions: The discount does not apply to First Class fares.
  • London transport: You cannot use this railcard for travel on the DLR or the London Underground.

How to apply for a 16-17 Saver:

You can apply for your 16-17 Saver online. With this being a digital-only card, the process is quick and easy. Simply complete your application online, pay for your railcard and add the digital card to your phone for 24/7 access.

There are a couple of things you’ll need with you to complete your online application:

  • Valid proof of ID (UK driving licence, passport or EEA national ID)
  • Digital passport-style photo
  • Debit or credit card to complete your payment.

How to use your 16-17 Saver

You can start saving as soon as your digital railcard is approved:

  • Choose the '16-17 Saver' option when buying tickets on our website, app or at a station ticket machine.
  • When travelling, be sure to have your railcard and a form of identification with you for when our conductors come around.

A 16-17 Saver costs £35 and is valid for one year from the date of purchase. If you buy your 16-17 Saver and your 18th birthday is within the academic year, you can continue using it for the full validity period, even if you turn 18 before it expires.

Yes. Eligible students can buy a 16-17 Saver up to the day before their 18th birthday if it is within their academic year. Any 16-17 Saver purchased from 17 August 2026 will be valid for one year from the date of purchase.

  • Oyster pay as you go daily price cap and pay as you go single fares for journeys on National Rail, London Underground and Docklands Light Railway
  • London Day Travelcards and Travelcard Season tickets within Zones 1-9
  • Tickets wholly for travel on London Underground and Docklands Light Railway
  • ScotRail
  • Caledonian Sleeper
  • Eurostar services
  • First Class tickets
