The West End is the heart of London’s theatre culture, and there is always something spectacular waiting for you. Whether you are looking for a long-running classic or the latest must-see adaptation, there’s something for every type of theatre-goer in the West End.

Experience the classics

Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time watching the West End, you can’t go wrong with the classics.

Head to the Sondheim Theatre to catch a showing of the world-renowned Les Misérables for an inspiring tear-jerker that has stood the test of time. 🇫🇷Fall for the haunting romance of Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty’s Theatre, or defy gravity at the Apollo Victoria Theatre with Wicked , to experience some of the most beloved West End adaptations brought to life. 🎼💚

Fun for the whole family

Travelling with the kids? London’s West End stages have plenty of magic to go around. Matilda the Musical is a witty, high-energy show that celebrates the power of imagination and mischief at the Cambridge Theatre. 📚🪄

The Lion King is another must-watch for feel-good musical fans far and wide, featuring award-winning puppetry that brings the Pride Lands to London’s Lyceum Theatre, and Oliver! at the Gielgud Theatre makes for the perfect family afternoon watching “The Boy Who Asked for More.” 🦁🎩

Sing-along musicals

For a night of dancing and jiving, Mamma Mia! at the Novello is the ultimate feel-good choice, filled with ABBA hits that get everyone on their feet. If you’re looking for something with a modern edge, Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre is one of the most talked-about shows on the West End, telling the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton through a mix of hip-hop, R&B and soul. 🎤🌊🇺🇸

Thrills and mysteries

If musicals aren't your thing, the West End has plenty of gripping dramas to get lost in. St Martin's Theatre’s The Mousetrap holds the record for the world’s longest-running play for a reason, with Agatha Christie’s clever whodunnit keeping you guessing until the very end. For fans of the wizarding world, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre is a spectacle filled with magic that has to be seen to be believed. 🔎🧙

Best times to travel for theatre shows

To make sure you have plenty of time to find your seat and grab a drink before the curtain rises, we recommend arriving at London Euston at least an hour and a half before your show starts.

  • For mid-afternoon matinees: aim to arrive at London Euston by 13:00

  • For evening shows: aim to arrive at London Euston by 18:00

For instance, if you’re taking the train from Birmingham to London, we recommend trains leaving by 11:00 for matinees, or by 15:30 for evening performances.

How to make the most of your train journey

One of the biggest perks of taking the train is that you can turn your travel time into ‘me time’. Instead of focusing on the road or listening to a sat nav, you can sit back and take the time to enjoy your journey, chat with friends or make the most of quality family time together. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🎲

Here are a few ways to make the most of your train journey to the theatre:

  • 🎵Pop in your headphones and listen to West End tracks to set the mood for your theatrical day trip.

  • 🃏Bring a pack of cards or travel-sized games to play with your friends or family on the train so you can maximise your time together and keep everyone entertained.

  • 🛜Use our onboard Wi-Fi to make sure you have your theatre tickets downloaded, or look for a spot near the theatre to grab a pre-show snack.

  • 🏙️Relax and recharge by sitting back and watching the London skyline come into view, so you arrive at Euston ready for your show.

Getting from London Euston to the West End

Once your train pulls into London, you’re on the doorstep of the West End. Getting from the platform to the front row is quick and easy, with fuss-free public transport links and walking routes to get you there in plenty of time.

  • 🚇Tube: For the quickest route, head to the Underground. Take the Northern line southbound (via Charing Cross) to reach Leicester Square in about 10 minutes. Alternatively, hop on the Victoria line southbound to get to the shops and theatres of Oxford Circus in the same time.

  • 🚶Walking: If you have time to spare and want to soak up the London atmosphere, take a straightforward 30-minute stroll down to Covent Garden . It's a great way to see some of the city's historic architecture before your show starts.

  • 🚍Bus: Just outside the station entrance, you'll find the Euston bus station. Hop on a bus heading towards Trafalgar Square or Leicester Square. It usually takes 15-20 minutes and gives you a great view of the city streets from the top deck.

  • 🚕Taxi: London Euston has a dedicated taxi rank located directly outside the station entrance.
