Whether you’re commuting to college daily or travelling to university a few times a week, having the right ticket can make a huge difference to your budget. 💰🎟️
But travelling as a student shouldn’t be expensive or complicated! Our student tickets are designed to give you an affordable way to travel throughout the term without unexpected costs. Here’s everything you need to know about the Student Season Ticket, including eligibility, pricing and how it works. That’s right, travelling as a student has never been so easy. 🚆😎
What is a Student Season Ticket?
The Student Season Ticket is designed for full‑time students who travel regularly during term time. 🎒📚It allows unlimited travel between two chosen stations during the specified travel window. No catch.
Travel tickets are available for:
- Autumn term: September - December 🍂
- Spring term: January - April 🌷

When you travel with the Student Season Ticket, your travel isn’t limited to traditional commuting hours. They’re valid in the evenings, weekends and during some school holidays. So whether you're studying at home or staying in touch with loved ones, you have the flexibility to travel on your terms. ☕️📖
The Student Season Ticket is designed for full‑time students who travel regularly during term time. If you only travel once or twice a week, you might find a better fit in our student tickets guide, which explores Railcards and flexible options.
A cost-effective option for student travel
One of the biggest benefits of choosing the Student Season Ticket is how much you save compared to daily or weekly tickets. 💰
Students aged 16 and over can save around 50% compared with equivalent standard adult season ticket travel
While students aged 15 and under can save around 25% versus comparable child season ticket journeys. For families and students managing term-time budgets, these savings can make a meaningful difference.
Prices remain fixed throughout the sales window, so buy early to lock down the best price.💰 🔒
When can I buy a student season ticket?
Student Season Tickets are sold during each term’s specific sales window. 🗓️ These open before the travel period begins and close before the end of the term. Because tickets aren’t available outside these sales windows, you’ll want to plan ahead to ensure you get the best deal.
Purchasing early guarantees you access for the full term, so you can travel confidently from day one without worrying about last-minute ticket buying or queues at the station.
Who can apply?
To qualify for a Student Season Ticket, you must be a student in full-time education with proof of student status, such as a student ID. You are also required to have a photocard. This can be requested during the process and must include a passport-style photo. 🪪✒️
Choosing the right ticket
Selecting the right ticket is simple but essential. Students aged 16 and over should choose the adult ticket, while students 15 years and younger should choose the child ticket.
If the student is 15 at the age of purchase but will turn 16 during the term, they are still eligible to select the child ticket and travel on it throughout the rest of the term.
Using and looking after your ticket
Student Season Tickets are issued as a physical ticket, and you’ll need to take good care of it. We recommend keeping it in its protective wallet and away from mobile phones or electronic devices that will help prevent damage and demagnetisation. You’ll also need to carry it with you whenever you’re travelling, as it must be presented during ticket inspections. 🎟️ 👨✈️
Should your ticket stop working for any reason, please email our support team at [email protected] . 🎒🪪
Replacements, lost tickets, and what to do
If you’re unable to visit Five Ways Station, help is still available. If your ticket is faulty or damaged, please email [email protected] with ‘Replacement’ in the subject line. A member of the team will then process the request and get in touch. 📩
For lost and stolen tickets, a replacement can be requested via the Student Ticketing Portal. Please note that a £10 administration fee may apply.
While waiting for replacement tickets, students must continue to buy standard travel tickets without the student discount. Don’t forget to keep your receipts, as reimbursements may be considered on a case-by-case basis. 💡
Travelling without a valid ticket
When travelling on LNR trains, a valid ticket is required at all times.
Students travelling without a valid ticket may receive a £100 penalty fare, plus the cost of a single fare for their journey. Additionally, repeated offences may be reported for prosecution, which could lead to a criminal record.
This applies even if:
- A Student Season Ticket is forgotten
- A ticket is damaged or unreadable
- A replacement ticket is pending
- A student boards without purchasing a valid ticket
In these situations, students must purchase a standard daily ticket instead.
The Student Season Ticket exists to make regular journeys simple and stress-free. Helping students travel on a budget and avoid unnecessary fees and penalties.
