As one of the largest towns in Roman Britain after the conquest in 43 AD, St Albans took shape as the significant Roman settlement of Verulamium before being destroyed by Boudicca and rebuilt in 61 AD. Around 304 AD, St Alban became the first British Christian martyr after being taken away from the town and executed for his beliefs by the River Ver, prompting an abbey to be built in his name and consequently giving the town its historic namesake.

Since then, the small market town of St Albans expanded through its industries in silk, cotton, straw-plaiting, and then in aircraft manufacturing and electrical goods between the two world wars.

Today, St Albans owes a lot of its unique character and charm to its historic roots, where visitors can wander the ruins of the Roman Theatre of Verulamium at the famous Gorhambury Estate , the only one of its kind in the country, or marvel at the Anglo-Saxon architecture of St Michael’s Church , marking the place where Alban was tried for his Christianity.

If history is your thing, the Verulamium Museum is a must-visit spot for visitors to St Albans, with an extensive collection of large-scale mosaics and recreated Roman rooms, perfect for all the family.

Visitors can also head over to the Hypocaust and Roman mosaic , just a 10-minute walk away from the church and Roman ruins, to learn about the 1800-year-old Roman heating systems uncovered during excavations in the 1930s.
